WORCESTER, Mass. -- A first-half goal by sophomore MJ Owens had the Mount Holyoke field hockey team in a 1-0 lead until three minutes remained in the third quarter, but WPI scored three times in a 10-minute span to take a 3-1 win in NEWMAC action Saturday at H. Carr Field.
The Lyons took the lead with 8:43 left in the second quarter, on a penalty corner. First-year Zoey Candito's (Belchertown, Mass.) entry ball from the top of the circle was tipped in the air toward the opposite post by junior Diane Lee (Boston, Mass.), and Owens (Fairfield, Conn.) batted the ball in for her team-high sixth goal.
Mount Holyoke senior Ainsley Gruener (Topsfield, Mass.) had a career-high 15 saves and held the Engineers scoreless despite a large disparity in shots, until the dam broke in the 42nd minute.
With WPI playing with a two-player advantage, Tatiana Nwosu scored on an assist by Lauren Meinhold to tie the game at 1-1 with 3:16 left in the third quarter.
The Engineers then took the lead in the first minute of the fourth quarter, with Meinhold assisting Eve Martineau's tip goal on a WPI penalty corner.
With 8:10 remaining, Leah Uglevich scored her sixth goal for a 3-1 WPI lead.
WPI (9-3, 4-1 NEWMAC) outshot Mount Holyoke 28-6 and had a 16-7 edge in penalty corners. The Engineers remain tied with MIT for second place in the NEWMAC.
Mount Holyoke (4-8, 0-5 NEWMAC) will host Springfield College on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 12pm.
