WELLESLEY, Mass. –- Claudia Summers scored both goals for Wellesley College, including the overtime winner, in a 2-1 NEWMAC win over the Mount Holyoke field hockey team Tuesday night.
Mount Holyoke (4-7, 0-4 NEWMAC) lost in overtime for the second straight game, and by one goal for the fourth straight game. The Lyons next play at WPI Saturday at 3pm.
The Blue have now won three straight, improving to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in NEWMAC competition.
The Blue had several penalty corner chances in the extra period. Ultimately, the offensive pressure paid dividends when Alex Butulis set up Summers, who tucked the shot into the lower side of the cage. Summers has now scored in four consecutive contests for Wellesley.
The Lyons took the initial lead, scoring 3:56 into the second quarter when junior Diane Lee (Boston, Mass.) redirected a hit from first-year Zoey Candito (Belchertown, Mass.) into the lower left side of the cage. Lee's fifth goal of the season ties her with junior Linnea Alsted (Crownsville, Md.) and sophomore MJ Owens (Fairfield, Conn.) for the team lead. The assist represents Candito's first career point.
Summers had a chance to knot it up at 1-1 in the second quarter with a penalty stroke, but Mount Holyoke senior goalie Ainsley Gruener (Topsfield, Mass.) stopped the attempt.
Wellesley got the equalizer with just over six and a half minutes left in regulation. Summers took a penalty insert from Annika Schermerhorn and ripped a shot from the left side of the circle that found the mark.
Gruener made five saves for the Lyons and Alsted made a defensive save, while Hannah Simmonds stopped three of four shots on goal for Wellesley.
The Blue attempted 16 total shots and limited the Lyons to six. Wellesley held an 11-4 penalty corner advantage.
