SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team won its fourth straight game by a shutout on Thursday night, rolling past Nichols College 4-0 on the MHC Turf to move ahead of the .500 mark at 4-3.

The Lyons outshot the Bison (2-5) 32-4, with Nichols attempting all four of its shots in the third quarter. Mount Holyoke also had an overwhelming 20-2 advantage in penalty corners.

After a scoreless first quarter, sophomore MJ Owens (Fairfield, Conn.) put the Lyons on the scoreboard in the 17th minute, when she blocked the progress of an advancing Nichols defender, and quickly rolled a shot inside the left post for her fourth goal of the season.

Mount Holyoke went up 2-0 on a penalty corner with 9:29 left in the half. Junior Scout Climie's (Guilford, Conn.) shot hit the left goalpost, and junior Mackenzie Hillman (Newington, Conn.) gathered the rebound and took a shot that rattled off a defender and the goalie before settling into the cage.

The score remained 2-0 until 3:27 remained in the third quarter. Climie's shot on a penalty corner was stopped by Nichols goalie Fallyn Belisle, but junior Diane Lee (Boston, Mass.) pounced on the rebound and drove the ball in for her fourth goal.

Hillman netted her second goal of the game with 4:20 left in the fourth quarter, tying her with Owens, Lee and junior Linnea Alsted (Crownsville, Md.) for the team scoring lead. It happened on another corner, as shots by Owens and junior Emily Bisson (Manchester, N.H.) were blocked before Hillman muscled the ball in close.

Mount Holyoke won its ninth straight game against Nichols and leads the all-time series 12-2.

Senior Ainsley Gruener (Topsfield, Mass.) earned her second shutout of the year, making two saves. Belisle made seven saves in the second half for Nichols, and starting goalie Jesa Altemose made one save in the first half. Merle Steinau had two defensive saves for the Bison.

Mount Holyoke begins NEWMAC play on Saturday at 1pm at MIT. Nichols will host Johnson & Wales Saturday at 1pm.
