SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team seized its first win of the season with a convincing 4-0 decision over Dean College, which entered Thursday night's game with a 3-1 record.
The Lyons (1-3) outshot the Bulldogs (3-2) by a 32-6 margin, including a 19-3 difference in shots on goal. Penalty corners (14-3) also leaned heavily toward the hosts.
Mount Holyoke got an early goal from junior Diane Lee (Boston, Mass.) within the game's first five minutes, and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Lee's second goal of the season came off the rebound after Dean goalie Sara Gardner made a difficult save on a drag flick by Mount Holyoke junior Linnea Alsted (Crownsville, Md.) that was bound for the upper right corner of the goal.
The Lyons made it 2-0 in the 37th minute of the game on a penalty corner, as sophomore Juliana Spaulding (Wakefield, Mass.) slid a hard pass into the middle of the circle, where sophomore MJ Owens (Fairfield, Conn.) got her stick on it for a perfect redirection into the goal.
Mount Holyoke scored again just 68 seconds later on another corner, when Alsted found junior Mackenzie Hillman (Newington, Conn.) open near the far post for the putaway, and Hillman's first goal of the season.
Owens notched her first career multi-goal game in the 55th minute, when sophomore Sara Ford (Street, Md.) drove along the goal line on the right and got a pass through traffic to Owens by the left post for an open finish.
Gardner made 14 saves for Dean, and Shea Cassani added a defensive save.
Mount Holyoke senior goalie Ainsley Gruener (Topsfield, Mass.) earned the shutout with two saves, while Alsted added a defensive save.
Mount Holyoke next plays a non-conference game at Albertus Magnus on Saturday at 11am. Dean will open GNAC play with a home game against Colby-Sawyer on Saturday at 11am.
