SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Juliana Meglio scored with 1:15 remaining in sudden-victory overtime to give the University of Saint Joseph a 3-2 comeback victory over the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team in the Lyons' home opener on Tuesday evening on the MHC Turf.
With under two minutes remaining in overtime, Devan Fox hit an entry pass from just outside the circle at the Mount Holyoke goal. Standing in front of Mount Holyoke senior goalie Ainsley Gruener (Topsfield, Mass.), Meglio got her stick on the ball and lost track of the ball's flight as it volleyed over both her and Gruener's head and dropped into the cage, sealing the tough-luck loss for Mount Holyoke (0-3).
Grace Kociszewski scored the first two goals for the visiting Blue Jays (3-1), including the game-tying goal with 9:20 remaining in regulation. From near the left post, Kociszewski took a long entry ball from Kaitlin Trudeau, swung and was stuffed by Gruener. The rebound came back to Kociszewski, who buried her fifth goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2.
Mount Holyoke seized a 1-0 lead in the first minute of the game, as off a restart junior Scout Climie (Guilford, Conn.) passed to junior Diane Lee (Boston, Mass.) for an open shot and finish, and the Lyons' first goal of the season.
Kociszewski tied the game for USJ at 1-1 in the fifth minute, when she caught up to a ball from Trudeau that traveled about three-quarters of the length of the field, behind the Mount Holyoke defense, setting up a wide open shot on Gruener that she converted.
The Lyons took back the lead with 5:04 remaining in the first quarter, after being awarded a penalty stroke on a penalty corner. Junior Linnea Alsted (Crownsville, Md.) buried her shot into the cage for the lead.
Mount Holyoke outshot USJ by a 25-12 margin, including 12-6 in shots on goal, and including a 14-2 difference in the second and third quarters combined. The Lyons also had a 14-2 advantage in penalty corners over the Blue Jays, who didn't get their first corner until the fourth quarter.
Gruener finished with three saves for Mount Holyoke, while Jaci Felix-Hull made 10 stops for the Blue Jays.
Mount Holyoke stays home Thursday at 6pm to face Dean College.
