BOSTON, Mass. – Powered by a pair of second-half goals, the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team defeated Simmons College, 2-0 in non-conference action on Wednesday. With the victory, the Lyons move to 8-4, extending their winning streak to three games. The homestanding Sharks are now 9-5 overall.
The visitors came out strong in the opening half, posting an 11-1 advantage in shots for the frame. MHC had a number of chances, including a shot by first year Mirei Golding-Powers off a penalty corner injection by junior captain Colby Newsham. Her shot banged off the post and on the ensuing penalty corner, the Lyons saw Sharks keeper Lucy McNamara post another save, this time off the stick of junior Mirjam Keochakian.
In the second stanza, the Lyons came out firing once again, but McNamara held strong. Mount Holyoke finally broke through at 61:58 on the Golding-Powers' first career tally. Off a cross from senior captain Sophie Perekslis at the near side, she was able to chip it in for the 1-0 advantage. The assist for Perekslis marked the 100th point of her career.
Less than five minutes later, Perekslis gave MHC the edge, finishing off a cross through traffic by Golding-Powers. The Lyons nearly capitalized less than a minute later after a shot from sophomore Anna Ballou, but McNamara once again garnered the save.
Mount Holyoke held a 21-2 edge in shots for the contest, while also owning an 8-0 clip in penalty corners. Lyons sophomore goalie Morgan Turner earned the win, posing one save, while McNamara recorded 13 stops. The Sharks also saw Abigail Anderson record a defensive save.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they host Wheaton College for Senior Day at 12pm. Simmons is back in action on Saturday as well, hosting Saint Joseph's (Maine) at 11am.
