#16 Field Hockey Blanks Westfield State, 5-0

WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Junior forward Julia Bell scored a pair of goals to lead #16 Mount Holyoke College to a 5-0 win over Westfield State University in field and spoil the Owls senior day on Tuesday night at Alumni Field. The Lyons improve to 14-2 on the season, while Westfield State falls to 7-9.

Bell (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham Monson) netted the Lyons first goal of the game just 11:12 into the contest. Knocking in a rebound of a Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) shot that had been saved by Westfield goalkeeper Megan Fountaine. Kilburn then added Mount Holyoke's second goal about six minutes later.

Westfield managed to hold the Lyons in check for the remainder of the half despite a barrage of shots.  Mount Holyoke held a 19-2 edge in shots in the first half, while Fountaine made 12 saves in the opening stanza.

Bell went on to score her second of the game in the 58th minute, this time burying the rebound of a Sarah LaQuerre (Old Orchard Beach, Maine/Cheverus) shot.  Laquerre would add another tally for the Lyons, while first year Sophie Perekslis (Sheffield, Mass./Berkshire School) also scored – notching her team-leading 14th of the season.

For the day, MHC had a 38-2 advantage in total shots and a 16-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Fountaine finished with 16 saves for Westfield. Mount Holyoke keeper Mariesa Mazzone (Gilroy, Calif./Gilroy) posted her first career victory in her first-ever start. She did not face a shot on goal.

Westfield will play its final game of the regular season on Friday night at Little East Conference foe Western Connecticut at 7:00 p.m.   The Owls are vying for a berth in the Little East Conference tournament. Mount Holyoke, which wrapped-up the second-seed in its upcoming NEWMAC tournament, will close out its regular season on Saturday in a 12pm game at Wheaton.
