#17 Field Hockey Shoulders 2-0 Loss to #12 Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – Annika Nygren '16 scored two goals as the 12th-ranked Amherst College field hockey team shutout 17th-ranked Mount Holyoke College, 2-0 Tuesday night in its 2014 home opener at Gooding Field.

With the win, the Jeffs improve to 2-1 overall on the year and deliver Mount Holyoke its first loss off the season. The Lyons are now 3-1 on the year.

Amherst got on the board at the 15:41 mark of the first when Nygren found the back of the net off a corner. The junior dished one out to Annie Turnbull '16 who sent one towards the net as Nygren deflected the shot into the lower left corner.

After roughly 18 minutes of scoreless action, the Jeffs increased their lead by two with just over a minute remaining in the half. Following another corner, Nygren found Elizabeth Turnbull '18 who then returned it to the junior. Nygren then sent one past Lyons' goalkeeper Liz DiCesare '17 for an insurance tally.

The second half featured a scoreless 35 minutes of action as neither team could find the back of the net.

Amherst held a decisive 22-9 advantage in shots and an 11-4 edge in corners.

Senior keeper Rachel Tannenbaum was terrific in net, posting her second shutout of the year while stopping eight shots. DiCesare made 13 saves in goal for the Lyons but allowed two goals in the losing effort.

The Jeffs return to the field Saturday, Sept. 13 when they head to Bowdoin for a 5 p.m. contest. Mount Holyoke is also in action on Saturday, hosting Castleton State at 12pm.
