AMHERST, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College hunt seat riding team outscored UMass-Amherst by two points to claim first place among nine teams Saturday at the UMass-Smith Show at Muddy Brook Farm.
The Lyons scored 39 points claim first place for the second time in as many shows this regular season. UMass followed with 37 points, followed by Bentley (24), Amherst (20), Smith (19), Springfield (18), Worcester State (16), WPI (13), and Williams (7).
Senior Hallie Phillips (Santa Rosa, Calif.) won Champion High Point Rider honors to headline a slew of MHC medalists. Also winning awards were senior Lia Liang (Beijing, China), Reserve Champion Introductory Rider; senior Kate Smith (Wells, Vt.), Champion Limit Rider; sophomore Emi Graf (Belmont, Mass.), Reserve Champion High Point and Reserve Champion Limit Rider; senior Charlotte Subak (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Reserve Champion Intermediate Rider; and first-year Salome Hizanishvili (Newton, Mass.), Reserve Champion Novice Rider.
The day started with Phillips earning first place in Open Fences. Next was Subak placing second in their Intermediate Fences debut, and junior Eliza Mutz (Stanford, Calif.) placing third in the same class. In Section B of Intermediate Fences, senior captain Charlie May (Stockton, N.J.) placed sixth, also in his Intermediate debut, and junior Carly Bitler (Wellington, Fla.) earned a fifth-place ribbon.
First-year Sophia Bull (Lumberton, N.J.) entered the ring in the first section of Limit Fences and took home first place. In Section B, Graf placed second and qualified for Regionals in Limit Fences. In Section C, junior Grace Neumuth (Marlborough, Conn.) placed second. In the last section, Smith placed first, and first-year Haoshun Sparks (Philadelphia, Pa.) placed third in her IHSA debut.
After schooling, senior Lili Evans (Groton, Mass.) made her IHSA regular-season debut and placed fourth in Open Flat, and Phillips placed first in the same section. After that, Intermediate Flat entered the ring. Mutz placed fifth, Subak placed second, and sophomore Alyssa Martinsen (Arlington Heights, Ill.) placed third.
Liang started off the Intro division and placed first. In Section B, sophomore Peixi Jia (Dongguan, China) placed first, and in Section C, sophomore Gaile Hao (Beijing, China) placed second.
In Limit Flat Section A, Neumuth returned to the ring, placing third. Smith placed second in Section B, May second in Section C, and Bitler fourth in Section D. Graf placed first in Section E, earning herself another spot at Regionals for Limit Flat.
Next were the Novice classes. First up was junior Christine Niu (East Windsor, N.J.), placing sixth in Section A. In Section B, Hizanishvili earned a first-place ribbon. In Section C, sophomore Nicole Richards (Middletown, R.I.) placed third. In Section D, sophomore Bessie Huggins (New Providence, N.J.) qualified for Regionals in Novice after placing second. In the same section, senior Lila Hancock (Morrisville, Vt.) placed fourth.
Finally, the Pre-Novice division started off with first-year Amy Shen (Nanjing, China) earning a fifth place in her IHSA debut. In Section B, junior Maria Ma (Jinan, China) placed fourth.
The Lyons will host the first Mount Holyoke Show of the season on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the MHC Equestrian Center.
