Mirarchi, Pearson-Siegel lead riding team to Smith College Show victory

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College riding team won its second show in as many days and its fourth in a row Sunday at the Smith College Show at Muddy Brook Farm.

Junior Emmie Mirachi (Harvard, Mass.) continued to reap awards at the show, claiming Champion High Point Rider and Champion High Point Intermediate Rider honors, while junior teammate Sunita Pearson-Siegel (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named both Reserve High Point Rider and Champion High Point Limit Rider on the day.

Mount Holyoke won the team scoring going away, scoring 44 points for the second straight day. UMass-Amherst was Reserve High Point College with 37 points, followed in the scoring by Amherst College (30), Worcester State (28), Smith (20), WPI (18), Springfield (18) and Williams (17).

After a chilly morning of schooling, the show began with strong rides from first-year Olivia Simon (Sacramento, Calif.) and senior captain Caroline Sullivan (Groton, Mass.) in Open Fences. Simon finished fifth and Sullivan sixth in their Open debut. Following were two sections of Intermediate Fences. In the first, Mirarchi had an elegant trip over fences to a first-place finish. First-year Hallie Phillips (Santa Rosa, Calif.) was next and delivered their own stunning trip to finish third in her class.

The ring moved on to four sections of Limit Fences. First, seniors Johanna Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.) and Rachel Banister (San Diego, Calif.) had impressive rides over fences to finish third and fourth respectively, with Sullivan qualifying for regionals in the event. Then, senior Marlene Healey (Coventry, Conn.) and senior Acadia Ferrero-Lampron (Denver, Colo.) put down stunning rides to earn second and third place. In the third section, Bates and first-year Charlotte Subak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each had lovely rides to finish second and fourth, respectively. In the final section of Limit Fences, Pearson-Siegel and sophomore Olivia Lindo (Harvard, Mass.) delivered solid trips over fences to place second and fourth.

The final section of jumping was Alumni Fences, where Mount Holyoke alum Maya Brody '20 had a gorgeous ride to finish second in her class. The ring then moved on to the flat section of the day.

After a short schooling break, the Introductory classes were up first. Sophomore Amy Fujioka (Tokyo, Japan) had a strong ride in the first section to place third in her class. Next, junior Alina Yuk (Northvale, N.J.) and senior Azuna Sawada each had beautiful rides to place first and third, respectively. In the final section, junior Kerina Li (Guangzhou, China) rode brilliantly to a first-place finish.

The alumni returned for a section of Alumni Flat, where Brody earned fourth place with an impressive ride. Then came two sections of Open Flat. In the first, Simon returned to place fourth in their class. In the second, Johanna Sullivan placed third. Then, Mirarchi and Caroline Sullivan returned to the ring for Intermediate Flat, with Mirarchi earning another blue ribbon and Sullivan placing third in her Intermediate Flat debut.

Pre-Novice was next in the ring with two sections, the first of which had a great IHSA debut ride from sophomore Toni Dris (Fonda, N.Y.), who placed third in her class. Second, first-year Kate Smith (Wells, Vt.) had a brilliant ride to place first in her class.

Following were four sections of Limit Flat. Subak returned to the ring in the first section with a spectacular ride to a blue ribbon finish. Then, sophomore Camille Cheng (Goleta, Calif.) had a wonderful ride to place third in her class. Healey and senior Daniela Fraser (Vero Beach, Fla.) entered the ring next with strong rides to finish third and fourth, respectively. In the final section, Pearson-Siegel and Phillips both returned to the ring with striking rides for a one-two finish.

The day ended with three sections of Novice Flat. Sophomore True Usiatynski (Fayetteville, N.Y.) was in the first section and had an impressive ride to finish third in her class. Next, first-year Nora Tripp (Westford, Mass.) and junior Anno Kostava (Tbilisi, Georgia) both had lovely rides, with Tripp finishing third in her IHSA debut and Kostava placing fourth in her Novice Flat debut. Last, but certainly not least, first-year Emma Cantalupo (Candia, N.H.) wrapped up the day with a gorgeous ride, placing first in her class.

The season will continue on November 5th at Holiday Acres Equestrian Center hosted by Worcester State University.
