Riding Finishes Fifth at Winter Tournament of Champions

Savannah, Ga. - January 29, 2022 - The Mount Holyoke College Equestrian team opened out their spring semester of competitions yesterday at the Winter Tournament of Champions, hosted by Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Ga. This show was the third in a series of four competitions in the fall and spring that feature top equestrian teams from around the country. The Lyons finished fifth overall out of 11 teams, totaling 35 points on the day.

Senior captain Sara Hearn (Tallahassee, Fla.) was the first to open action for Mount Holyoke in Open Fences, where she had a beautiful round, finishing in fourth place. Manager and senior Sierra Dunn (Florence, Mass.) was next up for the Lyons in Intermediate Fences, laying down a gorgeous trip to a fifth-place finish. 

Next up, Hearn entered the ring again for the flat phase of the ToC Collegiate High Medal. She had a lovely ride, progressing to the jumping phase of the Medal. A couple classes later, Hearn returned to the ring again, this time in Open Flat. She had a stunning ride, to finish in third place. The next class saw Dunn return to the arena for Intermediate Flat, where she had a wonderful ride to finish in third place as well.

After a schooling break, the show resumed with Limit Fences. Sophomore Emmie Mirarchi (Harvard, Mass.) put in a beautiful ride, finishing in first place. We then moved on to the ToC Collegiate Low Medal flat phase, where Mirarchi had a great ride, progressing to the fences phase of the Medal.

Sophomore Sunita Pearson-Siegel (Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed in Novice, where she had a gorgeous ride for third place. Mirarchi then returned to the ring for Limit Flat, where she had a wonderful ride for the blue ribbon. Next in the ring, sophomore Blair Yuk (Northvale, N.J.) had a beautiful ride in Introductory, placing second.

After the last flat class, Mirarchi was called back for the fences phase of the Low Medal, where she had a gorgeous round. Finally, Hearn returned in the jumping phase of the High Medal, with a wonderful round in a very competitive class. The results from these classes were announced at the end of the day. 

At the end of the day, it was announced that Hearn placed fifth in the High Medal, and Mirarchi placed sixth in the Low Medal. Mount Holyoke College finished in fifth place overall, with 35 points.

  • 10. Sacred Heart University - 22 points
  • 11. Goucher College - 19 points

The Hunt Seat Equestrian Team will start off the spring IHSA show season on February 26th with the UMass Amherst Show at Hadley Farm in Amherst, Mass.
