Riding 11th After Day 1 of Nationals; Finnerty Earns Reserve National Champion Honors

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Mount Holyoke College riding team opened action at the 2017 IHSA National Championships on Thursday at the Kentucky Horse Park. After the first classes of the championships, the Lyons sit 11th overall with several strong rides on the day.

Senior captain Bridget Finnerty (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) got things going in Individual Open Equitation Over Fences. After an outstanding ride, she sat fourth overall and was among the top four called back for testing. A solid showing in the testing phase saw Finnerty finish second overall as the Reserve National Champion.

Sophomore Daisy Sears (South Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham Regional) followed in Individual Novice Equitation Over Fences, finishing just outside the ribbons. She earned Honorable Mention in the event in a very tough field of riders.

The event finally turned to the team action as junior Sabrina Fox (Westfield, Ma./Westfield) competed in Collegiate Cup Novice Equitation Over Fences. Despite a solid effort, she finished with Honorable Mention.

Junior Mollie Kowalchik (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) was up next for the Lyons in Individual Intermediate Equiation on the Flat. In a strong field, she powered her way to 10th overall, earning the second individual ribbon of the day for MHC.

Fox then returned to the arena for Collegiate Cup Novice Equitation on the Flat, this time powering her way into the ribbons. Following a strong ride in the field of 16, Fox earned fifth overall and the first team points for MHC.

In the final individual event of the day, Open Equitation on the Flat, Finnerty returned, posting sixth overall, while the team events ended in Collegiate Cup Equitation on the Flat. Junior Anna Rzchowski (Madison, Wisc./West) took to the ring for the Lyons and despite a solid effort was just outside the awards field with Honorable Mention.
