Senior Jennifer Mbah (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) a Sociology and Psychology double major is a student-athlete on the Mount Holyoke College squash team who will graduate at the completion of the Spring 2021 semester.

Mbah posted a 15-9 overall record in the 2018-2019 season as just a sophomore. She powered her way to a five-frame win against St. Lawrence's Elizabeth Lasusa in a 5-4 team victory at the CSA Women's Team National Championships. In January 2020 at the Pioneer Valley Invitational, slotted at No. 1, Mbah aided the Lyons in an 8-0 victory by winning 11-6, 11-4, 11-3. In February 2020, Mbah contributed to an 8-1 win against Wellesley by achieving victory at No. 2. Later that day, down 0-2, Mbah came back to win the best of the five games, posting victories of 11-6, 11-4, and 11-4 in the last three games to help Mount Holyoke in a 5-4 victory over Vassar.

From Head Mount Holyoke Squash Coach, Erin Robson:

"Jennifer made a big impact on our squash program because she is both a talented squash player and a committed competitor.  Jennifer played a big role during the 2018-2019 season when our team earned the Most Improved Team Award from the CSA. She stepped up in some of our biggest matches that season. I have many examples but the one that stands out is a match Jennifer played at the CSA Team Championships in her sophomore year against St. Lawrence University. Down 2-0 in games, Jennifer somehow found a way to pull out the win by winning the next three games.  Her win in that match allowed us to advance to the semi-finals. With those wins in her sophomore season, Jennifer came back in her junior year and played fantastic squash at #2 and #3. She raised her game to another level. I was looking forward to seeing how much she could progress in her final season and it is hard to miss that opportunity with Jennifer. I will never forget celebrating our Seven Sisters Championships together! Jennifer brought her own special blend of energy, enthusiasm, and humor to our team!"

More about Jennifer...

Overall, share a few sentences about your time as a student-athlete at Mount Holyoke College. How has your experience as a student-athlete helped develop you into the person you are today?

I have been a student-athlete since I was in middle school. Continuing in college was a big make or break for me when deciding the college that I wanted to attend. Being on the squash team at Mount Holyoke has allowed me to live that dream once again.

What were some of your favorite memories as a member of your team?

Nothing beats off-campus team bonding activities with my teammates. There was always something to laugh about on every trip! There was one time that we went to the pool and hot tub at our hotel after a game even when Coach suggested not to do both. She ended up finding out, but we still joke about it to this day.

What are your plans following graduation?

I am planning to work at my current job until September then start traveling across West Africa for about six months. I also plan of starting my Master's program in Fall 2022.

Who have been some of your biggest supporters during your time at Mount Holyoke College? This can be anyone (i.e., family, friends, professors, coaches, etc.)

My mother has been my biggest fan! Every time I think about what she has done to help me through this entire process it almost brings me to tears. I am so grateful to have such an amazing woman in my life. Coach Erin Robson has also been a great supporter. She has always been there for me since I decided to attend Mount Holyoke. I'm also very thankful for all the amazing friends and teammates that I had over the years.

What is your favorite Mount Holyoke tradition?

I LOVE Convocation! That is one thing I'm really going to miss.

Any words of advice you have for the future student-athletes of Mount Holyoke College?

PLEASE listen to your bodies. As much as competing may benefit you, listen to your body (physically and emotionally). Take care of yourself first.
