Under the direction of first year head coach Chris Kibler, the Mount Holyoke cross country team had a solid season. The Lyons posted four top-10 finishes over six meets in 2017.
The Lyons began the season at the Smith College Invitational (5k), where they finished seventh. Junior Corrin Moss was MHC's top finisher, turning in a time of 21:15, which was her fastest time on the Smith course, besting her personal record by three seconds.
At the UMass-Dartmouth Invite (5k), the team finished 28th overall. Moss led the Lyons for the second straight week, beating her previous best time with a 20:33 mark. First year Simone Jacob also ran the best time of her young career with a time of 21.29. The following weekend at the Codfish Bowl (5k), the team finished 10th, while Moss finished 38th overall with her fastest time of her career at Franklin Park, finishing in 20.54.
Moss continued to improve as she cut her best time down by 45 seconds at the James Earley Invitational (5k) at Westfield State, placing 36th out of a field of 257 runners with a time of 19:48. Sophomores Emma Raney and Michelle Serrano paced each other well with times of 20:55 and 20:59, respectively to finish 102nd and 107th.
Mid-October saw the Lyons place seventh at the Seven Sisters Championship (6k), followed by a 10th-place finish at NEWMAC's. At Seven Sisters (6k), Moss finished just outside the top-20 with a 25:21 time, followed by a 19.57 finish at the NEWMAC Championships (5k). Junior Emsie Cronin turned in her best time with a 20:43 finish to place 58th overall.
MHC closed out the season at the 2017 NCAA New England Regional Championships (6k) in a field of 393 runners, Moss was 144th with a personal-best mark of 23:52, while Jacob was 196th overall with a time of 24:36, which was also a personal best. As a team, the Lyons placed 39th overall.
The Lyons had a strong year academically with nine student-athletes named to the 2017 NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Team. Among those honored were seniors Mia Barnes and Julia Criscione, juniors Victoria Parrish, Cronin, and Moss, along with sophomores Brigit Wolf, Maya Sterett, and Serrano. Sophomore Kayla Dillon also was a member of the NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Moss had the fastest time of the year in both 5k and 6k races with 19:48.20 and 23:52.70 marks, respectively.
