Volleyball drops NEWMAC decision at Coast Guard Academy

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team fell 3-0 to one of the better teams in the NEWMAC, the Coast Guard Academy, Tuesday night in Roland Gymnasium. The host Bears won for the fourth time in their last five outings, winning by set scores of 25-13, 25-17 and 25-13.

Shannon Shaw had a match-high 12 kills for the host Bears (13-5, 3-3 NEWMAC), while Noelle Tursky had a match-high 20 assists with 10 digs and six kills.

Senior Mar Simon (Miami, Fla.) led Mount Holyoke (6-8, 1-5 NEWMAC) in kills with 10, Simon's third time in double digits over the past four matches. She added seven digs on the night. Senior Marion Abeja (Kumi, Uganda) pitched in with seven kills and eight digs.

Sophomore Lucie Berclaz (Hull, Mass.) popped up a team-high 19 digs, and first-year Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) was credited with all 21 of the Lyons' assists.

Mount Holyoke entered the match ranked 14th in Division III in service aces per set, but the Bears avoided committing a single reception error on the night.

Eighteen Coast Guard players saw action, and the Bears attacked at a .278 percentage as a team to .068 for Mount Holyoke.

Mount Holyoke will host Western New England University in a non-conference match Friday at 6pm in Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.
