Volleyball Falls to Plymouth State and Norwich in Tri-Match

Plymouth, N.H. - September 14, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team dropped a pair of decisions to Plymouth State and Norwich University at Foley Gymnasium on the campus of Plymouth State on Saturday afternoon.

With the losses, the Lyons are now 2-7 overall. Mount Holyoke College fell to Plymouth State by the set scores of 14-25, 18-25, 16-25, and dropped sets of 16-25, 19-25, 13-25 to Norwich.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday, September 17 when it travels to Norton, Mass. to take on Wheaton at 7 p.m.

Plymouth State 3, Mount Holyoke College 0 -- Game One

Senior Sasha Simine (Kitchener, Ont.) led the way with six kills on 17 errorless swings, while Marianne Simon (Miami, Fla.) had a team-best six digs but the Lyons fell to Plymouth State in three sets to open play at Foley Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Lyons took a 4-2 advantage to start set one as the Panthers made back-to-back attack errors, before Plymouth State went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-4 lead. Trailing 16-9, Mount Holyoke College surrendered a 4-0 run to fall behind 20-9, before the Panthers were able to seal the 25-14 victory.

Mount Holyoke College jumped out to a 6-3 lead following a kill from Gabrielle Davis (Keller, Texas), but the Panthers would even the game at six apiece, before eventually going on a four-point run in the middle of the set to take a 17-13 lead. Extending their lead to nine, leading 23-16, the Lyons picked up a point on a service error but a kill on the ensuing rally sealed the victory for the hosts.

The Lyons erased an early 3-0 deficit with four-consecutive points, capped by back-to-back errors from the Panthers. Up 6-5 on a kill from Natasha Henry (Troy, N.Y.), the Panthers answered with three-consecutive points to make it 8-6. Pushing their lead to six, making it 15-9, Plymouth State would go on to take a 19-11 advantage in the late stages of the set. From there, the Lyons pulled to within six but the hosts closed out the match on a service error from Mount Holyoke College.

Norwich 3, Mount Holyoke College 0 -- Game Two

Simine and Simon each had seven kills and Chelsea Galicia (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) registered a team-best nine digs as the Lyons fell to Norwich, 3-0, in their second match of the day.

Norwich jumped out to an early 4-0 lead to start the match, but a kill from Simine broke the silence and got the Lyons on the board. Another kill from Simine brought Mount Holyoke College to within three, but the Cadets answered with three-consecutive points to regain a 12-6 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Simon and Henry made it a one-point, 14-13 game, but from there, Norwich went on an 8-2 run to take a 22-15 lead. The Cadets then closed out the set 25-16.

Facing a 5-2 deficit to begin the second set, Mount Holyoke College registered six-consecutive points to take an 8-5 advantage following an ace from Simine. Even at 17 apiece, Norwich picked up a pair to make it 19-17, before the Lyons once again tied the game at 19 on back-to-back ball handling errors from the Cadets. From there, Norwich would score six unanswered to seal the 25-19 victory.

Mount Holyoke College held on to a one-point advantage following kills from McKenna Crosby (Jonesborough, Tenn.), Sarah Bishop (Rutland, Mass.) and Simon, but a three-point spurt gave the Cadets a 10-7 lead. From there, Simon and Crosby had kills late but Norwich would then extend its lead to six and hold on to that lead until eventually closing out the set and the match.
