Volleyball Shoulders Tough Loss in NEWMAC Opener at Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Jenny Karnes (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Shannon Roseen (Malden, Mass.) combined for 13 kills and Babson College hit .325 as a team on its way to defeating visiting Mount Holyoke College, 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-19), in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's volleyball action on Tuesday night at Staake Gymnasium.

With the win, Babson is now 5-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, while Mount Holyoke falls to 2-4 and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.

Karnes finished with a team-high seven kills, while Roseen had six kills on six attempts to go along with a match-high six service aces. Senior Lorraine Mackiewicz (Edison, N.J.) added five kills, first-year Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) led all players with 19 assists and sophomore Abby Beecher (Pittsford, N.Y.) contributed a match-high 13 digs for the Beavers.

Sophomore Jamesa Allen (Orlando, Fla.) led all players with nine kills, while senior Natalie Lyon (Oakton, Va.) dished out 15 assists to lead the Lyons. Sophomore Cameron Graham (Sarasota, Fla.) finished with eight digs on the night.

The Green and White recorded 14 kills and hit .458 to breeze to a one-set lead. Karnes and sophomore Gizem Yilmaz (Istanbul, Turkey) combined for six kills in game two, while Roseen had three service aces and senior Kristen Haislip (Waterford, Va.) chipped in with two to help the Beavers take a commanding 2-0 lead.

Babson took an early 5-1 lead behind the serve of Roseen in the third set, but Mount Holyoke used three kills from Allen to pull within 10-8. The hosts responded though, getting two kills apiece from senior Alana Atchison (Pembroke, Mass.) and sophomore Catherine Hunter (Duxbury, Mass.), and scoring 10 of the next 12 points to build a 20-10 advantage it would not relinquish.

Both teams return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as Babson hosts Smith, while Mount Holyoke visits Emerson, also at 1 p.m.
