Volleyball Drops NEWMAC Match to Springfield

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Powered by an outstanding effort from junior middle blocker Lauren Holt, the Springfield College volleyball team defeated Mount Holyoke College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-7) in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday.

With the victory, the Pride improve to 7-1 in conference and are now 22-2 on the season. The Lyons slip to 6-10 and are now 0-8 in the NEWMAC.

Holt (Granby, Conn./Granby) totaled a match-best 12 kills to go along with 10 blocks.  Sophomore outside hitter Kayleigh Helgesen (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino) recorded seven blocks and six kills while while graduate student Molly Giannattasio (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and junior Marnae Mawdsley (Bolton, Conn./Bolton) were also outstanding in the match, combining for 24 assists, 19 digs, and six aces. 

For Mount Holyoke, senior captain and outside hitter Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) notched a team-high eight kills with seven digs and a service ace. First year libero Sara Robicheau (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame HS) notched eight digs, while junior setter Natalie Lyon (Oakton, Va./Flint Hill School) notched 12 assists with a team-best 11 digs.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they head to Smith College for matches against Framingham State (11am) and Plymouth State (1pm). Springfield is back on the court next Tuesday when it hosts WPI for a NEWMAC match (7pm).
