Led by head coach Tina Lee in her 31st season, the Lyons saw action in 16 meets in 2017-18. A pair of record-breaking performances during the indoor season highlighted the Lyons' season.
The Lyons opened up the indoor season in December for the Smith College Winter Invitational, which saw sophomore Charleen Theroux and first year Isabelle Wohlin carve a spot into the Mount Holyoke record books. Theroux competed as a pentathlete and had a personal-best in the 800-meter dash (2:38), the high jump (1.50m), and the shot put (10.18m). Her total score of 3,038 broke the school record that has stood since 2004, and made Theroux a New England Division III qualifier.
Wohlin had a strong showing in the 60m hurdle with a time of 9.69, which put her into the next round. She then improved her time to 9.41, finishing second overall, breaking the school record, and making her a New England Division III qualifier.
The Lyons had some time off before returning to the Smith College Invite in January, where the Lyons placed fifth overall. Sophomores Emma Raney and Kayla Dillon posted a 1-2 finish, respectively in the 5,000-meter run. The following weekend Raney posted a sixth place finish in the 3,000-meter run at the Springfield Massasoit Classic with a time of 11:32.16.
MHC opened February at the Tufts Cupid Challenge Pentathlon as Theroux had an outstanding performance with an overall score of 3,020 – good for second place. As the season progressed to the final meet of outdoor competition, Theroux re-set her own school record as she accrued 3,175 total points with several personal-best marks.
To open up the outdoor season, the Lyons traveled to the Tufts Snowflake Classic, where the 4x100m relay team comprised of Theroux, Wohlin and first years Ireland Clare Kennedy and Tamara Mukulu, placed eighth overall with a time of 52.24. Action moved to the Smith Outdoor Invitational, which saw junior Julia Hecking take home a victory in the hammer throw with a distance of 38.45 meters.
The Lyons went on to host the Spring Fling Invitational that saw a number of solid performances. MHC's 4x100m relay squad finished second overall with a season-best time of 51.78, while Hecking was first overall in the hammer throw with a 39.90m distance. Raney also had a strong day as she powered her way to a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Mount Holyoke concluded its regular season at the Springfield Invitational, where Theroux crossed the line in 12.74 in the 100m dash to qualify for New England DIII Championships. Theroux continued on to place second in the 400m dash with a mark of 1:101.27.
The Lyons were back in Springfield the following week for the NEWMAC Championships. Theroux took down her personal record in the 400m dash with a time of 58.63 to place third overall. The Lyons 4x400m relay squad of Theroux, Mukulu, Wohlin, and Clare Kennedy finished fifth overall with a season-best time of 4:12.37.
The season finale was in Cambridge as the Lyons posted career-bests in three separate events at the DIII Championships. Raney began by placing 11th overall with a 12:05.40 time, followed by a sixth place finish from Theroux in the 400m dash with a time of 58.51. Theroux, Mukulu, Wohlin, and Clare Kennedy finished the day with a 12th place finish in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:11.61.
Theroux, Hecking, senior Julia Criscione, junior Emsie Cronin and Dillon each were named to the NEWMAC All-Academic squad.
