Track & Field Opens 2018 at Smith Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College track & field team opened its 2018 slate on Saturday, competing at the 2018 Smith College Pioneer Invitational. The Lyons posted fifth-place overall, securing 45 points behind a number of solid efforts on the afternoon.

Opening the days action were Lyons' sophomores Emma Raney and Kayla Dillon, who posted a 1-2 finish, respectively in the 5,000-meter run. Raney earned the victory, crossing the line in a time of 21:03.40, while Dillon garnered second with a time of 22:07.88. The next event, the 60-meter hurdles, saw first year Isabelle Wohlin earn third overall, posting a New England Divsion III qualifying time of 9.63.

In the 1-mile run, sophomore Brigit Wolf took 13th overall with a time of 6:19.87, while in the 200-meter dash, she placed 20th with a time of 33.89. In the 3,000-meter run, sophomore Michelle Serrano was fifth with a mark of 12:13.70, while senior Mia Barnes crossed the line in sixth with a time of 12:40.14.

Junior Julia Hecking shined in the field events, placing third overall in the weight throw with a distance of 11.68 meters (38-04.00). Sophomore Charleen Theroux then posted a throw of 9.46 meters (31-00.50) to finish sixth in the shot put. Theroux went on to earn fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.02 meters (16-05.75), while Wholin was eighth with a mark of 4.66 meters (15-03.50).

On the afternoon, American International earned the team victory with 202.50 points. Wesleyan was second with 106 points, while the host Pioneers rounded out the top-3 with 92 points.

Mount Holyoke returns to action next Saturday when it competes at the Springfield College Massasoit Invitational. Action is scheduled to begin at 1:30pm.
