Track & Field Finishes Seventh at FSU Sheehan Invitational

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Powered by a number of strong performances, the Mount Holyoke College track & field team finished seventh of 17 teams at the 2016 Jim Sheehan Invitational, hosted by Fitchburg State University. Leading the way for the Lyons was senior Elizabeth DeLeon, who finished top-six in two events on the day.

DeLeon crossed the line in fourth overall in the 1500-meter run. She had a time of 5:06.80. Close behind in the event was junior Mia Barnes, who was eighth overall with a time of 5:23.63. First year Corrin Moss also had a great effort, placing ninth with a time of 5:23.83.

The trio also performed well in the 800-meter run as DeLeon finished sixth with a time of 2:33.93. Barnes crossed the line in 12th with a time of 2:40.68, while Moss was 13th with a time of 2:41.23.

In the 100-meter dash, junior Kristyn Carter sprinted her way to 18th overall with a time of 14.41, while first year Zahkeyah Allen was 20th with a time of 14.43. The 200-meter dash saw first year Mara White place 11th with a time of 29.61, followed by sophomore Shante Henderson, who crossed the line in 17th with a time of 30.20.

White also finished well in the 400-meter dash, posting a time of 1:06.28 for a sixth-place finish.  Henderson also excelled in the 100-meter hurdles, placing fifth overall with a time of 17.98.

The Lyons 4x100 meter relay team, which featured first year Destiny Williams, Carter, Allen and Henderson, was fourth in a time of 54.82, while rounding out the solid finishes was first year Donari Yahzid with a 14th place effort in the javelin throw. She posted a mark of 25.69 meters (84-03).

Mount Holyoke returns to action next weekend when it travels to Northampton to compete at the Smith College Invitational. Action at the meet begins at 11am.
