Chai wins in first round of A Singles Draw at ITA Regionals

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Mount Holyoke tennis sophomore captain Annika Chai won her first-round match in the A Singles Draw Friday at the ITA New England Regional Championships, highlighting the first day of the tournament for the Lyons.

Chai (London, England) defeated Sophia Wiernusz of Curry College in the A Singles Draw Round of 64 players, by the convincing score of 6-0, 6-1. Chai advanced to the Round of 32, where she met the top seed in the tournament, Sarah Pertsemlidis of MIT, and Pertsemlidis won 6-0, 6-3.

Chai and first-year Jaskirat Kaur (Mohali, India) teamed up in the tournament's doubles draw on Friday morning and competed well, but ultimately fell by an 8-6 score to Caitlin Cass and Sana Bhat of Connecticut College.

Kaur also competed in the A Singles Draw on Friday, but fell in the first round 6-0, 6-0 to Marielle Sauber of Smith, sending the first-year to Saturday's consolation round of play.

Mount Holyoke next has a home head-to-head match against Salve Regina on Friday, Sept. 30.
