Tennis Shoulders NEWMAC Defeat at Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Babson College tennis team notched a strong doubles effort and swept through singles enroute to a 9-0 victory over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athetic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday evening. With the win, the Beavers - who are ranked #17 in the region - move to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Lyons slip to 5-8 and shoulder their first loss in conference play to move to 2-1 in the NEWMAC.

Doubles action saw the first team of sophomore Ching-Ching Huang and senior captain Ishita Tibrewal shoulder a tough 8-0 loss to Alexa Tutecky and Jennifer Quenard. From three, Babson gained the 2-0 lead as Claire Foster and Emily Roeper posted an 8-3 victory over Lyons juniors Madison Rosen and Joy Maran. The Beavers gained the sweep as Carolina Merz and Kylie Kam bested Lyons sophomore Catherine Peabody and first year Anya Gerasimova, 8-4 from two.

Singles action saw Babson gain a 4-0 lead as Tutecky defeated Huang at one, 6-0, 6-0. At two, Merz bested Tibrewal, 6-1, 6-1. Foster then defeated Gerasimova at four by a 6-0, 6-2 margin, while from five, Kam earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Rosen.

Roeper went on to best Lyons junior Clara Wang at six with a 6-1, 6-1 win, while the final match came down to the third spot between Quenard and Peabody. Quenard opened with a 6-3 victory, but Peabody fought back, taking the set into a tie-breaker before ultimately falling 7-6 (7-2).

Mount Holyoke is right back in action on Tuesday, continuing NEWMAC play with a 4pm match at Springfield College. Babson also returns to the court Tuesday, traveling to Wellesley for a 4:30pm tilt.
