Tennis Posts 7-2 Win Over Fighting Scots

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Led by a 3-0 effort in doubles action, the Mount Holyoke College tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over Gordon College in a non-conference tilt on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Lyons improve to 13-9 overall, while the Fighting Scots are now 15-6 overall.

MHC got things going well as first year Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan/St. Johnsbury Academy) and senior captain Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School) notched an 8-5 win over Gordon first years Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif./Colfax) and Abigail Denney (Peoria, Ariz./Northwest Christian) in the first flight.

Sophomore Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India/Modern HS for Girls) and first year Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore.) made it a 2-0 advantage for the homestanding Lyons at two, posting an 8-4 win over sophomore Katherine Jefferys (Parkton, Md./Excelsior Academy) and first year Kaelyn Hall (Sugar Land, Texas/Logos Preparatory Academy).

Mount Holyoke closed out the doubles sweep at three with junior Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) and first year Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) earning an 8-3 decision against the Fighting Scots duo of junior Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H./Trinity) and Gabrielle Brucker (Eleva, Wis./Regis).

Singles action saw Chen pick up the fourth MHC point with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Brucker from the sixth flight. Yazawa earned the fifth point for the Lyons, besting Hanson in the top flight by a 6-1, 6-3 score.

Gordon's Denney picked up a point at two after Holloschutz was forced to retire and the Fighting Scots earned their second point as Jeffreys defeated Tibrewal at three by a 6-1, 6-2 margin.

A 6-0, 6-2 win by Wang at four over Caron gave the home team its sixth points, while senior captain Michelle Cai (Hong Kong, China/St. Paul's Co-Educational) fought back from a set down at five to post a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) win against Hall.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Endicott in the final game of the 2015-16 season. Match time is set for 10:30am. Gordon concluded its record-breaking season (program best 15 wins) with Thursday's match.
