Tennis Finishes 3rd at 2016 Seven Sisters Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Action at the 2016 Seven Sisters Championship has concluded and the Mount Holyoke College tennis team finished the weekend in third of five teams at this year's event. The Lyons suffered a tough loss to Vassar, but rebounded against Smith in the final match of the day. MHC is now 12-9 on the season following the four matches.

In the win over the Pioneers - a 3-2 decision - the Lyons had a solid effort in doubles with two points. First year Madison Rosen and sophomore Ishita Tibrewal grabbed a 7-5, 6-2 win over Janan Fugel and Alexandra Steck in the first flight. Junior Amy Chen and first year Clara Wang then combined at two for a 6-0, 6-0 win against Morgan Barney and Leight Johnston.

Singles action saw first year Ayame Yazawa pick up the critical point as she battled to a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 win over Noa Dubin in the first flight. Senior captain Margaux Holloschutz shouldered a 5-7, 6-3, 9-11 loss to Samantha Peikes at two, while classmate and fellow captain Michelle Cai fell against Joanna Kim, 3-6, 6-7 (1-7) at three.

Against the host Brewers - a 4-1 loss - the Lyons were led by a solid performance in second flight singles by Holloschutz. She gutted out a 5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 10-8 victory against Morgan Fitzgerald to give MHC its lone point.

Yazawa suffered a tough 5-7, 2-6 loss to Kate Christensen in the first flight, while Connie Yoo bested Cai at three, 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles action saw Vassars Shayna Becker and Hanna McGuire defeated Tibrewal and Rosen, 6-1, 6-0 at one, while Kelsey Van Noy and Morgane Flournoy bested Chen and Wang, 6-3, 6-2 at two.

At the event's conclusion, Holloschutz and Yazawa were named to the All-Seven Sisters Tournament Team.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Gordon College at 4:30pm. The Lyons will close out the week and the 2016 season next Saturday when they host Endicott at 10:30am.
