SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke swimming and diving team evened its head-to-head record at 4-4 Friday night, as the Lyons outscored Western New England University 146-84 with no diving competition between the teams.
"The team really swam well and a number of people set personal bests," said head coach Dave Allen. "People swam some 'off' events and performed really well."
Among the night's highlights were a first-place tie in the 100-yard backstroke race between first-year Gretchen Freisthler (Washington, D.C.) and first-year Carolina Loayza (Fort Myers, Fla.), with both Lyons finishing in 1:07.64.
The Lyons started off the evening with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, with the quartet of junior Adji Diouf (Arlington, Va.), sophomore Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.), sophomore Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany), and first-year Ruth Bailey (Edison, N.J.) finishing the race in 1:59.49.
Other top performances by the Lyons included:
- Junior Evelyn Bushway (Schenectady, N.Y.) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:38.21 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:36.69.
- Bailey won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:05.55 and the 100-yard freestyle (59.02), and tied for second in the 50-yard freestyle (27.20).
- Schneider won the 500-yard freestyle in 6:04.83.
- Sophomore Lauren Madsen (Ghent, N.Y.) won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:16.16.
- Loayza won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.58 seconds and had the fastest time in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.10).
- Junior Seran Goudsouzian (Hellertown, Pa.) won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:44.49.
- Senior Anais Magner (Whakatane, New Zealand) swam the fastest time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:39.07).
- Heierhoff placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.16) and tied for second in the 50 free with Bailey (27.20).
- Diouf placed second in the 100-yard freestyle (59.29).
- Swimming the fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:00.20) were first-year Sophie Allen (Lopez Island, Wash.), Freisthler, Schneider, and senior Erin Schrama (Providence, R.I.).
Mount Holyoke competes at the Skidmore Sprint Invitational Saturday, Jan. 28, starting at 1pm.
