Swimming & Diving Competes Against Vassar & Trinity

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – It was another solid afternoon of competition on Saturday as the Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team squared-off against Trinity College and Vassar College at Kresge Pool. The Lyons shouldered a tough 211.5-84.5 loss to the host Brewers, while falling 206-93 to the Bantams.

The Lyons dove right back into action on Saturday afternoon, opening the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The foursome of senior captain Claire Beckett, junior Bri Groves and rookies Naomi Brown and Caitlyn Richmond posted a time of 1:59.77.

Next up in the 1000-yard freestyle, sophomore Natalie Burkett was sixth with a time of 12:15.03, while in the 200-yard free a pair of rookies made their mark. First year Ashton Bliss was fourth in the event with a time of 2:10.80, while classmate Riley Hicks was sixth with a mark of 2:11.36.

In the 100-yard backstroke, first year Courtney Dunham notched sixth with a time of 1:12.76, while in the 100-yard breaststroke, Groves took fourth with a time of 1:13.69. Also finishing strong in the event was rookie Gwen Evans who was seventh overall with a mark of 1:19.06.

Brown then posted fifth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:31.68, while in the 50-yard free, rookie Tamara Mukulu was third with a time of 26.79. Richmond was also solid in the event, placing fifth with a time of 27.62.

In the 100-yard free, Hicks was seventh with a time of 1:00.03, while junior Kate Flaherty was ninth with a time of 1:08.02. Meanwhile in the 200-yard back, Beckett grabbed fourth overall, touching the wall in 2:23.79.

Bliss continued her solid afternoon, placing fourth in the 500-yard free with a time of 5:47.40, while Beckett was close behind in fifth with a mark of 5:47.87. Brown posted fifth in the 100-yard fly (1:08.63), while Groves rounded out the individual event swims in fourth with a 2:26.70 in the 200-yard individual medley.

In the closing 400-yard freestyle relay, the Lyons saw the foursome of Brown, Hicks, Dunham and Bliss finish fourth with a time of 4:06.19. MHC's other group of sophomore Sarah Ratzlaff, junior captain Delany Berry, Burkett and senior Amy Lim, were close behind in fifth with a time of 4:09.81.

Diving was paced by sophomore Samantha Nemivant, who took first overall in the 1-meter with a score of 254.40 points. She then took first overall in the 3-meter event, posting an NCAA Regional Qualifying score of 265.90.

Mount Holyoke is now idle until next Saturday when it hosts the 2018 Seven Sisters Championship at the Kendall Sports & Dance Complex pool. Action on Saturday begins at 10:00am, while the meet continues on Sunday at 9:30am (diving).
