Swimming & Diving Defeats Smith in Regular Season Dual Meet Finale

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team got a number of outstanding efforts on the day, including multiple victories from four different swimmers, to lead the Lyons to a 157-142 win over Smith College on Saturday afternoon. With the win, MHC concludes its dual meet schedule with an 8-2 record.

The Lyons opened strong as junior Anne Kuenning, first year Bri Groves, senior captain Sarah Crocker and junior Katie Tyler posted a time of 1:57.13 to win the 200-yard medley relay. Kuenning went on to claim the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in a time of 1:03.14.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, senior captain Cathleen Pruden had the win with a time of 1:08.30, while Crocker also finished well with a fourth-place mark of 1:15.27. Pruden went on to win the 200-yard butterfly in a school record time of 2:12.07. That mark eclipsed her own time of 2:12.71 - set in 2012. Groves also finished well in the 200-fly with a time of 2:30.34.

The 50-yard freestyle saw Tyler earn the win with a time of 25.63, while junior Emily Craig was second with a mark of 26.57. Tyler and Craig went 1-2 again in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 57.01 and 57.96, respectively.

Kuenning then swam to victory in the 200-yard backstroke, posting a time of 2:17.58, while in the 200-yard breaststroke, Groves was the winner with a time of 2:33.49. Crocker also finished well in the event, earning third in a time of 2:40.99.

Pruden recorded her third individual win of  the day in the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 5:09.25. Other solid finishers in the event included senior Erica Carvell in third (5:45.66), while first year Delany Berry was fifth (6:05.67).

Tyler also earned her third individual win of the day in the 100-yard butterfly, hitting the wall with a time of 1:03.34, while Crocker was second in a time of 1:05.37.

Groves picked up her second individual victory in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:18.37, while in the final event, the foursome of Carvell, Kuenning, Craig and Pruden, combined for a time of 3:48.63 to win the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Mount Holyoke is now idle until February 18th when it heads to Cambridge, Mass., to compete at the 2016 NEWMAC Championships. Action at the meet begins on Thursday (2/18) and runs through Sunday (2/21).
