No. 22 Squash Travels to No. 17 Bowdoin and Bates

Brunswick, Maine - January 10, 2020 - The Mount Holyoke College squash team played a pair of away contests on Friday, beginning with a 7-2 loss at No. 17 Bowdoin, before heading to Bates, where the Lyons fell to the Bobcats 9-0.

With the losses, the Lyons, which were ranked No. 22 in the latest College Squash Association (CSA) National Rankings, falls to 1-5 on the year.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will head to Colby College on Saturday, January 11 for a 3 p.m. contest.

Bowdoin 7, Mount Holyoke College 2

Despite victories from Mihiliya Methsarani (Panadura, Sri Lanka) and Nicole Lara Granados (Bronx, N.Y.), the Mount Holyoke College squash team suffered a 7-2 setback at No. 17 Bowdoin on Friday afternoon.

Methsarani defeated Caroline Glaser (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), 11-5, 11-0, 11-2 at the No. 1 spot, while Lara Granados knocked off Catherine Adams (London, England) 11-3, 11-3, 11-0, at No. 8.

At No. 2, Bowdoin's Clio Bersani (Sai Kung, Hong Kong) defeated Kuzivakwashe Madungwe (Harare, Zimbabwe) 11-1, 11-1, 11-1, while at No. 3, Emma Robson (Amherst, Mass.) fell to Ursula Sze (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), 11-3, 11-1, 11-1. 

At No. 4, Giselle Cabrera (Bronx, N.Y.) was defeated by Melissa Horan (Berwyn, Pa.) 11-5, 11-4, 11-1, while Jennifer Mbah (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) fell to Sophie Barber (Rye, N.Y.) by the scores of 11-4, 11-3, 11-8 at No. 5.

Junior Genesis Lara Granados (Bronx, N.Y.) battled hard at No. 6 but eventually fell to Lucy Noel (Maynard, Mass.) 12-10, 13-11, 11-9, before Caroline Burkhart (Wayne, Pa.) defeated Meli Marquez (New Haven, Conn.) at No. 7 by the scores of 11-2, 11-7, 11-5.

Wrapping up, Janiqua Davis (New Haven, Conn.) fell to Tessa Frank (Charlotte, N.C.) at No. 9 by the scores of 6-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-3, 11-6, while in the exhibition match, Anna Braman (Wellesley, Mass.) defeated Gretchen Clauss (Swarthmore, Pa.) 11-7, 11-6, 11-9.

Bates 9, Mount Holyoke College 0

Playing its second match of the day, Mount Holyoke College fell to host Bates College, 9-0, in the Bates Squash Center on Friday evening.

 At No. 1, Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) defeated Methsarani in a five-set battle that finished with the set scores of 11-5, 8-11, 1-11, 11-2, 11-8. At No. 2, Robson fell to Erika Parker (San Salvador, El Salvador) 11-2, 11-0, 11-1, while at No. 3 Cabrera lost to Maeve O'Brien (Essex, Conn.) 11-2, 11-3, 11-1. At No. 4, Mbah dropped a 11-6, 11-5, 11-1 decision to Katie Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y.), while at No. 5, Genesis Lara Granados fell to Natasha Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) 11-3, 11-1, 11-2.

Rounding out the match, Victoria Haghighi (Bronx, N.Y.) defeated Marquez 11-6, 11-5, 11-1 at No. 6 before Nicole Lara Granados fell to Cordelia Dotson (Houston, Texas) 11-2, 11-1, 11-0. The No. 8 match saw Natalie Bachman (New Canaan, Conn.) defeat Davis 11-4, 11-0, 11-4, while at No. 9, Braman fell to Lucy Moseley (Philadelphia, Pa.) 11-3, 11-4, 11-2. In the exhibition match, Jing Xu (Hangzhou, China) fell to Tiffany Cervantes (New Haven, Conn.) 11-7, 11-8, 11-5.
