CLINTON, N.Y. - Mount Holyoke College dominated in its opening match and was edged in its second to finish in a split during action on Sunday at Hamilton College. The #28 Lyons opened with an 8-1 win over #24 St. Lawrence, before shouldering a tough 5-4 loss to the #22 Continentals. MHC is now 7-2 on the season.

The Lyons, who have not beaten the Saints since the 2011-12 season, dominated in the opener.

First year Mihiliya Kalahe Arachchige was the victor at the top of the ladder, besting Makyla Kelley by an 11-4, 11-3, 11-6 margin. From two, senior Nadindhi Udangawa posted an 11-9, 11-3, 11-6 win over Alexandra Infante, while at three, senior Ragini Ghose battled back for a 6-11, 11-2, 11-0, 11-6 triumph over Starnisha Ramsey.

Four saw first year Maeve Watts-Roy grab an 11-5, 11-3, 11-7 win over Gabrielle Ahrens. In the bottom half of the ladder, the two teams battled hard. At five, senior Lessly Portillo gutted out a 7-11, 3-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8 win over Katherine Leiva. Six was another gutsy fight between sophomore Jennifer Mbah and Elizabeth Lasusa. Mbah countered from an opening and third game loss for an 8-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9 victory. Seven saw sophomore Kuzivakwashe Madungwe best Lindsay Whipple, 11-7, 11-9, 11-8.

The final two spots of the ladder saw another pair of battles. From eight, senior Tanishka Sachidanand shouldered the Lyons only loss, falling to Abigail Smith, 11-4, 10-12, 8-11, 11-3, 14-12, while sophomore Genesis Lara Granados garnered the five-game win at nine over Georgina Green, 10-12, 11-9, 4-11, 11-7, 13-11.

In the latter match against the host Continentals, the Lyons earned their victories in the top-half of the ladder. Kalahe Arachchige paced the way with an 11-3, 11-4, 11-0 win at the top over Charlotte Zonis. From two, Udangawa was a 3-1 winner over Caitlin Stern by an 11-13, 11-4, 11-5, 11-6 score.

Ghose earned the Lyons first point of the match at three, earning an 11-7, 11-5, 14-12 victory over Megan Grip, while Watts-Roy posted an 11-6, 11-4, 1-11, 11-9 win against Liesl Guenther from four.

Portillo once again had a strong battle at five, coming up just short against Sydney Soloway, who battled back from down two for the 8-11, 8-11, 11-7, 16-14, 11-6 victory. The Continentals saw a clean sweep from the six through nine spots as Eleanor Struthers bested Mbah, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9 at six, Lindsay Jadow had an 11-7, 11-7, 11-4 win over Madungwe at seven, Madison Sakheim bested Sachidanand, 11-2, 13-11, 11-6 at eight and Genesis Lara Granados shouldered a tough 11-6, 13-11, 11-6 loss to Jean Beecher at nine.

Mount Holyoke is now idle until January 11th when it returns to action at Williams College for a neutral site match against Bowdoin College at 8pm.
