Squash Shoulders Tough 5-4 Loss to Connecticut College

Cambridge, Mass – The Mount Holyoke squash team concluded its season in a nail-biter at the CSA Team Championships Epps Cup (D) division on Sunday afternoon. The Lyons fought hard, but eventually fell, 5-4 to #27 Connecticut College. MHC finishes the season with a record of 8-14.

The match opened up at the four in favor of the Camels where Denise Bonilla defeated first year Jennifer Mbah (Jamaica Plain, Mass./Beaver Country Day School) 11-7, 11-8, 11-5. Classmate Kuzivakwashe Madungwe (Harare, Zimbabwe/Arundel School) had a strong match at the six spot with a tough 11-5, 11-5, 5-11, 14-12 victory over Alllie Fuller to knot it up at one-all, but Camels sophomore Phoebe Pliakas-Smith won the lead back with a 11-7, 12-10, 11-5 win over first year Nicole Lara Granados (Bronx, N.Y./Dewitt Clinton) at the eight. Lyons junior Ragini Ghose (Dubai/Millfield School) tied the match once again, taking down Molly Carabatsos, 11-5, 11-5, 11-9 to make it 2-2.

Action continued with the odd rounds as Davis Lemay and Jacqueline A. Chu earned wins at the Lyons from the five and seven to gain a 4-2 advantage. MHC began to mount a comeback as senior Brandy Williamson (New York, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) upended Margaret Davey at the top of the ladder, 11-6 11-3, 11-3 to cut the deficit down to 4-3. Classmate Emily Chang (Carmichael, Calif./Mira Loma) then earned a huge victory at the three to tie the match at 4-4 as she battled Elizabeth Varoli to a score of 11-6, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7. Connecticut College first year Noelle Giuliano sealed the deal for the Camels from the nine to earn a 5-4 match victory.

Ghose, Chang, and Senior Kirina Gair-MacMichael (West Hartford, Conn./Ethel Walker School each received CSA Scholar-Athletes honors prior to today's match.
