#28 Squash Splits Weekend Road Action; Defeats #37 Colgate

GENEVA, N.Y. - The Mount Holyoke College squash team was in action on Saturday, traveling to William Smith College for a pair of matches. The Lyons shouldered a tough 9-0 loss to the host Herons, but rebounded with a 9-0 victory against Colgate University in the second match of the day. MHC is now 7-12 overall on the season.

In the opener against William Smith, the Lyons saw four of the nine matches competed in go to a fourth set. From two, junior Ragini Ghose battled the Herons' Cashew McCarthy and despite opening with a 13-11 victory, Ghose shouldered 11-8, 11-7, 11-9 scores for the match decision. Lyons rookie Emma Robson also had a strong effort from eight, facing a 1-0 deficit before battling back to tie with a 13-11 decision. Unable to hold on to the edge, Karina Lazaro battled back with an 11-4 win in the third and the two players grinded it out in the fourth but the decision went to Lazaro by a 14-12 margin and the 3-1 win.

The second match of the afternoon saw the Lyons take on the Raiders. Senior captain Brandy Williamson had an 11-5, 1-2, 11-4 win over Olivia Taylor at the top of the ladder, while Ghose bested Jamie Hogan, 11-2, 11-2, 11-1 at two. The third spot saw senior captain Emily Chang posted victory over Ann Childress, 11-2, 11-2, 11-4.

At four, junior Lessly Portillo earned an 11-3, 11-8, 11-0 victory against Gwen Koehler, while from five, rookie Kuzivakwashe Madungwe defeated Laura Bunn, 11-3, 11-1, 11-4. First year Nicole Lara Granados bested Hallie Burke from six by an 11-7, 11-5, 11-6 margin, while Robson garnered an 11-3, 11-2, 11-4 win against Elena Smith from seven.

Rookie Genesis Lara Granados posted an 11-6, 11-5, 11-1 victory against Celine Turkyilmaz from eight, while at nine, senior captain Kirina Gair-MacMichael defeated Annie Knowles, 11-1, 11-1, 11-3.

Mount Holyoke is now idle until February 16 when it travels to Harvard University to take part in the 2018 CSA Team Championships. Action begins on Friday and runs through Sunday.
