Lyons Post 9-0 Sweep Over Smith On Its Way To A Split

NORTHAMPTON, MASS - The Mount Holyoke College squash team split two games this weekend, picking up a 9-0 sweep over Smith, but shouldering a loss against Northeastern. MHC is now 2-2 on the year.

The Lyons opened up with a sweep against the Pioneers, posting 3-0 victories in each match. Junior Brandy Williamson (New York, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) had a solid win at the top of the ladder, defeating Josephine Surer by an 11-2, 11-1, 11-4 margin. Sophomore Lessly Portillo (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career Magnet) was an 11-3, 11-4, 11-3 victor over Geena Choo at two, while sophomore Tanishka Sachidanand (Karnataka, India/Canadian International School) defeated Eva Morgenstein, 11-5, 11-8, 11-0 from the third spot.

At four, Senior Rose Minichiello (Collinsville, Conn./Canton) was an 11-4, 11-5, 11-4 winner against Beverly Lipsey, while senior Amanda Lee (Windsor, Conn./Ethel Walker School) had an 11-0-11-0-11-3 at the five. In the sixth position, junior Kirina Gair-Macmichael (West Hartford, Conn./Ethel Walker School) posted a 11-1, 11-1, 11-2 win against Claire McCoy.

 Senior Syry Mitchell (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) went on to defeat Stephanie Wang 11-6, 11-3, 11-3 from the seven. Junior Namrata Ahuja (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) picked up a 12-10, 11-3, 11-6 victory over Mieko Kuramoto, while junior Emma Lynch (Milton, Mass./Beaver Country Day School) rounded out the action with an 11-0, 11-2, 11-2 victory at the nine for the sweep.

The Huskies picked up a close, 5-4 win over the Lyons in the second game of the day. Williamson opened up play with an 11-5, 9-11, 11-4, 12-10 victory over Nicole Powers. Sophomore Ragini Ghose (Dubai/Millifield School) posted a 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 11-6 victory over Christy Long at two, but Molly Alvino came up with an 11-6, 11-6, 11-4 win at the three over Portillo.

From the four, senior Allison Shilling (New Canaan, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) had an 11-2, 11-2, 11-1 victory over Alex Berg to increase the margin to 3-1. Huskie's Lucia Ryll posted an 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9 win from the five, while Minichiello scored the fourth point for the Lyons with an 11-9, 11-6, 12-10, victory at six.

Northeastern picked up three consecutive wins to eventually earn the 5-4 victory.

Mount Holyoke will be back in action on Friday, facing Bates College in home duel at 6:00pm.
