Squash Defeats Vassar, 7-2, to Claim Epps Cup Consolation Final

WALLINGFORD, Conn. - A strong effort from the third through ninth positions carried the Mount Holyoke College squash team to a 7-2 victory over Vassar College in the consolation final of the Epps Cup at the CSA Women's Team Championship. With the victory, the Lyons conclude their season with an 8-16 record, while the Brewers finish with a 7-9 mark.

MHC picked up its third victory of the season against Vassar with today's match, anchored by an outstanding effort from the first group of matches. First year Ragini Ghose was victorious at three, defeating Jiamin Wu by an 11-7, 11-5, 11-4 margin. Classmate Lessly Portillo was a winner at six with an 11-9, 11-4, 11-4 victory against Diana Howland, while fellow first year Tanishka Sachidanand had an 8-11, 11-4, 11-8, 12-10 win against Kelly Rissman at nine.

Vassar grabbed a point back as Fiona Agger bested Allison Shilling at two with an 11-5, 11-7, 11-6 win, but sophomore Emily Chang countered with another hard-fought battle, defeating Cherylann Mucciolo at five by a 7-11, 11-4, 11-6, 7-11, 11-2 margin.

Senior Annie Wong posted an 11-6, 11-4, 11-1 win at seven against Emma Glickman, while classmate and team captain Catherine Ryan battled to an 11-6, 10-12, 11-6, 11-6 victory over Isabelle Bertram from four. Senior Rose Minichiello rounded out the wins for the Lyons at eight, besting Steph Zhu, 11-6, 11-8, 11-5.

The Brewers gained the final point of the match as Hannah Nice powered her way past sophomore Brandy Williamson, 11-8, 11-8, 8-11, 11-8 at the top of the ladder.

Mount Holyoke will now wait for the announcement of selections to compete at the 2016 CSA Individual Championships, which will be held March 4-6 at the Chelsea Piers Club in Stamford, Conn.
