Squash Defeats Haverford to Close Out Pioneer Valley Invite

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Mount Holyoke College squash team closed out action at the 2016 Pioneer Valley Invitational on a high note Sunday, defeating Haverford College by a 9-0 margin. The Lyons improve to 4-8 overall, while Haverford slips to 2-8 on the season.

The Lyons ladder was strong from top to bottom led off by a win from the ninth position by first year Tanishka Sachidanand. She defeated Emilia Cobbs, 11-5, 11-8, 13-11. Sophomore Emily Chang took an easy 11-7, 11-4, 11-2 win over Grace Fioramonti-Gorchow at six, while first year Ragini Ghose battled back from an injury the day before for a solid 11-3, 11-7, 11-5 victory against Sarah Madigan at three.

Senior Rose Minichiello was the victor at eight, defeating Ava Lichauco, 11-3, 11-8, 11-7, while at four, first year Lessly Portillo hung tough for an 11-8, 11-9, 7-11, 11-7 win over Isabel Agnew. Senior Catherine Ryan bested Emily Berlin at five by an 11-2, 11-2, 11-5 score, while classmate Annie Wong gutted out an 11-4, 11-7, 4-11, 6-11, 11-7 win at seven.

Junior Allison Shilling held strong at two, defeating Bethany Simonds, 7-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-5, 11-4, while sophomore Brandy Williamson won from the first position 11-6, 11-4, 11-3 over Isabel Gotucco.

The Lyons return to action on Friday evening when they take on William Smith at 6pm at the MHC Squash Courts.
