SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Emiko Pope scored off a corner kick by Leena Mehendale and Macy Lehrer converted a penalty kick to lift No. 4 nationally ranked MIT to a 2-0 women's soccer win at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday, dealing the host Lyons their first loss of the season while remaining unbeaten in the NEWMAC opener for both teams on Saturday.
MIT (6-0-1, 1-0-0 NEWMAC), ranked first in Region II, outshot Mount Holyoke by a 31-0 margin, including 14 shots on goal. Mount Holyoke (3-1-2, 0-1-0 NEWMAC), ranked eighth in Region II, nonetheless was effective in limiting the Engineers' high-quality chances. The Lyons penetrated the Engineers' penalty area with some regularity but were denied any scoring threats by MIT's defense.
In the 14th minute, Mehendale sent a low corner kick towards the near post. Pope came to the ball and flicked it off of her right heel, sending the ball skittering past Mount Holyoke sophomore goalie Evie Krieg (Frisco, Texas) and into the net for her third goal of the season. It was only the second goal allowed this season by Mount Holyoke, which entered the weekend tied for 11th in Division III in goals allowed per game (0.200).
Less than six minutes later, Maeve Sullivan made a run into Mount Holyoke's penalty area and was tripped, drawing a penalty shot for the Engineers. Lehrer stepped in to shoot the ball off the low left post and in the goal for her first goal of the season and a 2-0 MIT lead.
MIT had a would-be goal wiped out by an offsides call in the second half, but the score remained 2-0 from the 38th minute on.
Krieg made 12 saves for Mount Holyoke. Cassidy Jennings (5-0-1) and Ava Muffoletto each played a half in goal for MIT.
Mount Holyoke will host Emerson next Saturday at noon.
