NORTON, Mass. -- First-year defender Schuyler Pettibone's first-half goal stood up as the game-winner, as the Mount Holyoke College soccer team defeated Wheaton College 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, breaking a 29-game winless streak against their NEWMAC rivals.
Pettibone (Raleigh, N.C.) scored her first collegiate goal to cap a wild play in the 25th minute. Junior Hannah Keochakian (Amherst, Mass.) sent a free kick from beyond the left-hand boundary of the Wheaton penalty area. In a mixer near the left post, junior Avery Livingston (LaGrange, Ill.) got a foot on the ball and it caromed off of the crossbar. Pettibone, charging in, buried an open shot for the 1-0 Mount Holyoke lead.
The Lyons of Mount Holyoke (3-7-2, 1-6-0 NEWMAC) prevailed in spite of modest disadvantages in shots (17-9) and corner kicks (4-1) to the host Lyons of Wheaton (3-10-1, 1-6-0 NEWMAC).
First-year goalkeeper Evie Krieg (Frisco, Texas), playing for the first time since Sept. 18, earned the shutout for Mount Holyoke with six saves.
Mount Holyoke rises to 14-30-3 all-time against Wheaton. Mount Holyoke's last victory against Wheaton occurred in 1994; there have been two ties between the teams since then, including a 2008 NEWMAC playoff quarterfinal game in which Wheaton advanced on penalty kicks.
Mount Holyoke will host Clark University Wednesday at 6pm.
