Soccer Falls to Smith in NEWMAC Action

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Smith College netted a pair of first half goals and made them stand in a 2-0 victory over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday evening. The Pioneers move to 9-9-0 and 4-6-0 in conference play, while the Lyons slip to 3-12-2 and 1-9-0 in the NEWMAC.

The Pioneers opened up the game's scoring in the 25th minute after sophomore defender Peyton McBride (Manchester, N.H./Goffstown) converted a feed from junior midfielder and captain Reilly Sullivan (Keene, N.H./Keene).

Smith made it a 2-0 advantage in the 37th minute as first year forward Zufan Bazzano (Great Barrington, Mass./Monument Mountain) powered home a pass from sophomore defender Addy Stearns (Edwards, Colo./Denver Online).

Mount Holyoke had chances to find the back of the net in the second half, including a shot in from by junior forward Minerva Veeser-Bobea (Arlington, Mass./Arlington), but was unable to get one by Pioneers rookie goalie Naomi Falkenberg (Sutton, Mass./Sutton Memorial).

For Smith, Falkenberg earned the victory, stopping one shot over 60:03 minutes of action. Junior Julia Donovan (Waltham, Mass./Ridgewood) came on for the final 29:57 of relief and was not forced to make a stop.

The Lyons saw senior goalie Amanda Manaster (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills) shoulder the loss, making nine stops.

Smith owned a 17-5 advantage in shots for the contest, while also posting a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

Mount Holyoke closes out its regular season on Saturday when it plays at Babson at 4:30pm. Smith wraps-up its regular season on Saturday as well, traveling to Clark for a 1pm tilt.
