Soccer Falls in Non-Conference Game at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Mount Holyoke's goalkeepers combined for 16 saves but the Wesleyan soccer team came away victorious with a 5-0 win over the Lyons on Wednesday evening. The Cardinals move to 4-2 on the season, while MHC is now 2-4 overall.

Wesleyan opened with a quick advantage in the opening half of action beginning with a goal from Kayla O'Brien in the ninth minute. O'Brien then assisted on the Cardinals' second tally at 18:01, feeding the ball to Gianna Argento for the 2-0 edge. The home team added a final goal with less than five minutes remaining in the half as Shannon Sweeney buried one in for the 3-0 lead at half. Lyons senior goalie Amanda Manaster, who shouldered the loss in the game, recorded eight saves during the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, Wesleyan kept up the pressure once again as Katie Stewart Frizzell found the back of the Mount Holyoke net at 79:45. Less than 10 minutes later saw Sweeney record her second goal of the day and the final score overall at 87:39. The Lyons saw sophomore goalie Maria-Lucia Delgado play the final frame, recording eight saves as well.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday at 12pm when it hosts Wellesley in the SAAC Game of the Week. Wesleyan is also in action Saturday, traveling to Bates for an 11am match.
