Soccer Falls in NEWMAC Action at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. - Powered by three second-half goals, the Wheaton College soccer team posted a 4-2 win over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. The win moves Wheaton to 12-3-1 overall and 6-2 in conference play, while MHC slips to 2-12-2 with an 0-7-1 mark in the NEWMAC.

The visiting Lyons opened the games scoring as sophomore Minerva Veeser-Bobea tipped one in the 29th minute of play. The homestanding Lyons countered through as Hannah Lepordo clipped a pass to Lily Scammon, who buried it in the 35th minute.

The stalemate was broken in the second half as Megan Healy put wheaton ahead in the 61st minute off a feed from Caren McCarthy, followed two minutes later by a goal from Lepordo for the 3-1 advantage.

Wheaton tacked on another tally in the 70th minute as Aymara O'Brien-Pappa put one in. Mount Holyoke fought late as Veeser-Bobea notched her second of the game and third of the season with less than 40 seconds to play to close the gap to 4-2.

In goal, Leann Wolf earned the win, posting four saves over 68:07 of action. Alexa Barbagallo came on for the final 21:53 and did not have a save. For Mount Holyoke, junior keeper Amanda Manaster recorded 12 saves on the afternoon.

MHC is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Smith for a 3:30pm match against the Pioneers. Wheaton is also in action Tuesday, hosting Springfield at 4pm.
