Soccer Ties 3-3 with Bay Path In Non-Conference Action

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Mount Holyoke soccer team played to a 3-3 draw in non-conference action against Bay Path College on Tuesday night. With the tie, The Lyons are now 2-6-1, while the Wildcats move to 4-2-1.

For Mount Holyoke, senior captain Suz Rose (South Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham Reg.), senior forward Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain/P.P. Dominicos – Cardinal Xavierre), and sophomore forward Hannah Finn-Erb (Northampton, Mass.Northampton) each registered a goal on the evening, while Sanaú Ruiz picked up an assist. In net, junior goal keeper Amanda Manaster made four saves on seven shots on goal.

For the Wildcats, juniors Jailinne Ruiz (Hadley, Mass./Hopkins Academy) and Megan Mackie (APO,/AE/Kaiserslautern American High School) and Jillian Barry (Jewett City, Conn./Griswold High School) each recorded tallies for the visitors. In goal, sophomore keeper Caitlyn Esposito (East Haven, Conn./East Haven High School) had seven saves, taking on 10 shots.

The Lyons were solid throughout the first half, outshooting the Wildcats, 12-3. In the 20th minute, Dale Leonheart (Petaluma, Calif./St. Vincent de Paul) attempted a free kick that nearly went in before Esposito made the reaching save. Off of the rebound, Finn-Erb had an attempt from close, but the shot just barely missed wide. Moments later after a timeout, Finn-Erb scored off of an assist from Leonheart to go up 1-0.

With four minutes remaining in the half, Sanaú Ruiz found herself unguarded on the right side of the field. She fired a shot from deep that made it past Esposito's reach to put the score at 2-0.

Seconds later, Bay Path's Ruiz scored the equalizer as she fired a shot past the reach of Manaster to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into the second half.

In the second stanza, the Lyons started out strong with in the 46th minute of action off of a corner score from Rose to take a 3-1 advantage. Bay Path put pressure on Mount Holyoke, scoring two unanswered goals, including the game tying goal by Mackie in the 72nd minute. On the equalizer, the ball was sent in deep into the box as sophomore midfielder Joanna Feliciano (Springfield, Mass./Renaissance High School) battled with an MHC defender for a quick cross to the right through the goal mouth. Mackie rushed in down the right flank, burying the ball into the top corner past the reach of Manaster.

Action headed into the first overtime where MHC had two shot attempts, but none that found the back of the net. In the second overtime, the Lyons nearly scored off of another corner kick when Sanaú Ruiz attempted a header that went high. Bay Path had their chances as well, including a shot from senior defender Kyrsten Thibodeau (Dalton, Mass./Wahconah High School), which forced Manaster to make a quick stop. The final attempt of the contest saw an MHC show go just wide, ending the match in a 3-all draw.

Mount Holyoke will be back in NEWMAC action Saturday, hosting Springfield at 12:00pm. Bay Path will also be in action on Saturday, facing Wheelock at home at 1:00pm.
