Soccer Shoulders Tough Loss in Season Opener

Junior goalie Amanda Manaster makes a save.

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Despite an 11-save performance from junior goalie Amanda Manaster, the Mount Holyoke College soccer team suffered a tough 3-2 double-overtime loss at UMass-Dartmouth on Friday afternoon. It marked the season opener for both squads.

Locked in a 1-1 tie after the opening half of action, the homestanding Corsairs gained the advantage in the 52nd minute as junior forward Courtney Hewitt (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) buried a rebounded ball past Manaster (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills). The ball had come in off of a corner, but Manaster was unable to control as Hewitt notched her second of the contest.

The lead held until the 61st minute as senior forward Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain/P.P. Dominicos - Cardenal Xavierre) sent a header in past senior keeper Madison Boucher (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional). Junior forward Avia Jacobs (Calabasas, Calif./Sierra Canyon) earned her assist on the play after sending the ball in off a corner kick.

Mount Holyoke had several chances late in the half, including opportunities by sophomore forward Hannah Finn-Erb (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) - who had the Lyons' first tally - and Jacobs with less than three minutes to play, but Boucher was up to the task.

Both teams had a chance in the first overtime, but in the second OT frame it was first year forward Alexis Pacheco (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) who sealed the victory. Collecting the ball off a pass from senior forward Becca Field (Brentwood, N.H./Exeter), Pacheco buried it in on the top right for the game-winner.

Manaster finished the contest with 11 saves, including six over the opening 45 minutes of play, while Boucher posted seven stops.

The Corsairs held a 27-14 shot advantage, while the Lyons owned a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Albertus Magnus for a 1pm match. UMass-Dartmouth is also back on the pitch on Sunday, heading to WPI for a 5pm game.
