Lyons Soccer Falls, 3-0 in NEWMAC Finale

WORCESTER – The WPI women's soccer team picked up a 3-0 victory over Mount Holyoke Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium. As a result, the Engineers will share the regular season title with MIT and, thanks to WPI's 2-1 double OT win on September 17, the Crimson and Gray will be the top seed in next week's NEWMAC Women's Soccer Championship.

Late in the second minute the Engineers benefited from an own goal as Turton's cross was knocked in by a Mount Holyoke defender. With 3:30 left in the half, junior Lizzie Rooney (Harvard, MA) finished off a rebound on a shot initially taken by junior Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, NH). Espinola converted a penalty kick at 71:56 to cap the scoring. The Boynton Hiller's defense did not allow a shot on goal.

Mount Holyoke sophomore Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) was credited with a pair of shots to go along with one by rookie McKenna Lamb (Redland, CA). senior Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ontario) made nine stops on 12 attempts that came her way.

Overall, WPI had an 18-3 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Lyons wrap up their season with an 8-10 record overall and 2-8 in conference action.
