Soccer Duo Earns NEWMAC Weekly Honors

BOSTON, Mass. – The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) has announced its weekly awards and Mount Holyoke College student-athletes Sara Sanaú Ruiz and Zoe Marshall were recognized as the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, in women's soccer.

Sanaú Ruiz, a sophomore forward who hails from Zaragoza, Spain, powered the Lyons to a 2-0 week in NEWMAC action, scoring a pair of goals with two assists. In a 1-0 victory over Clark on Wednesday, she notched the game-winning tally, adding five shots (two on goal) in the shutout win. Sanaú Ruiz closed out the week in a 3-2 victory over Wellesley. In that contest, she scored a goal and added two assists, including one on the game-winning tally.  

The former P.P. Dominicos - Cardenal Xavierre standout is having another outstanding season, leading the team and conference in a number of categories. Through 12 games – all as a starter – she has notched a pair of goals with 11 assists for 15 points. Her assists rank as the best among all conference players, leading second by six helpers. She also ranks seventh in the NEWMAC in total points.

Sanaú Ruiz also owns a team-high 35 shots, including 16 on goal. In her rookie season in 2015, she led the Lyons in scoring with 15 goals and an assist for 31 points. Ranking second in the conference in goals and third in points, Sanaú Ruiz was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team.

A senior captain and goalkeeper from Mississauga, Ont., Marshall earned her honor after posting 12 saves in last week's 2-0 effort against conference opponents. In the shutout over Clark, she recorded nine stops, including five in the second half of action. Marshall then posted three stops as the Lyons bested Wellesley.

Marshall, who previously played at Cawthra Park Secondary School, currently leads the NEWMAC in saves with 87. She also ranks second in save percentage with a .888 and is eighth in both goals against (11) and goals against average (1.07).

Last season, Marshall had a banner year, finishing as the NEWMAC leader in saves (144) and save percentage (.894). She went 8-6-3 overall, owning a 0.96 goals against average over 1600:09 minutes played. For her efforts, she was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team. In her career, Marshall has a 22-25-3 overall record, posting a 1.50 GAA and a .844 save percentage. She has also recorded 407 shots, which currently ranks fourth all-time in program history.

Mount Holyoke is back in action on Tuesday evening in a 7pm match at Coast Guard. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday in a 1pm contest at Wheaton.
