Lyons Soccer Shoulders NEWMAC Loss to MIT

CAMBRIDGE, MASS - The MIT women's soccer team came away with a 2-0 victory over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on a rainy Saturday evening in Cambridge.

MIT sophomore Amy Apostol (Los Gatos, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) got the Engineers on the board just 13:41 into the contest. Apostol shot the ball off the post and it trickled into the back of the net off a cross by junior Olivia Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral), who was heading towards the end line. For Apostol, it was her fourth goal of the season and for Struckman it was her third helper of the year.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of MIT until the 81:01 mark when the Engineers were awarded a penalty kick. Freshman Emily Berzolla (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) lined up inside the box and deposited her third goal of the season into the lower left corner of the net, extending the lead to two.

Mount Holyoke had its best chances in the first half as junior Jamie Collings (Gainsville, Fla./Eastside) sent a curling shot towards net and in the 44th minute when sophomore Dale Leonheart (Petaluma, Calif/St. Vincent de Paul) did the same off of a free kick at the 20-yard line, but both attempts were saved by MIT senior keeper Lauren Ullmann (Princeton, N.J./Princeton).

Ullmann earned her ninth win and fifth shutout of the season (9-3-0) with three saves in a complete game effort, while Lyons netminder Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ont./Cawthra Park Secondary School) (4-5-0) tied a season-high with 15 saves this evening.

Both teams continue NEWMAC action in their next contests. Mount Holyoke hosts Clark University on Wednesday, October 5th at 6:00 p.m., while MIT heads to Wheaton College on Tuesday, October 4th for a 4:00 p.m.
