Soccer Edges Clark, 2-1 in OT Thriller

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Senior forward Kara Singleton tallied a pair of goals, including the game-winning tally just 3:29 into overtime, to lift the Mount Holyoke College soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday. With the win, the Lyons move to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play, while the Cougars slip to 1-10 and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.

Locked in a 1-1 tie after regulation, Mount Holyoke carried its momentum from the second half into the extra session as senior forward Cassidy Robinson (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) sent a perfect cross from left to right. Singleton (Parsonsfield, Maine/Sacopee Valley) was there to bang it home on the right side, lifting MHC to its first NEWMAC win over the year.

Clark opened the game's scoring, netting its tally in the 20th minute. Off a pass from senior Charlotte Mays (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) to the top of the 18, sophomore Haley Connors (Burrillville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) ripped a shot that banked off the crossbar and came down, just crossing the line for the goal.

The Cougars would maintain their advantage until the 66th minute mark as Singleton and Robinson once again combined to pull the home team even. Splitting the defense, Robinson slid the ball over to Singleton, who was on the move and able to send the ball into the lower right corner.

Both goaltenders were solid in the game as MHC's Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ont./Cawthra Park Secondary School) recorded six stops. Her counterpart, Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) made five saves in the loss.

MHC held a slight 13-12 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Lyons return to the pitch on Saturday, hosting Wellesley at 12pm. Clark is also in action on Saturday, hosting MIT at 1pm.
