SOUTH HADLEY, MASS. – Coast Guard Academy used seven combined goals from first years Marietta Davis and Mary Goins to lead the Bears past Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletics Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday. With the victory, CGA improves to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference, while the Lyons are now 3-11 overall and 1-5 in the NEWMAC.
Davis (Great Falls, Va./Oakcrest) and Goins (Peach Tree City, Ga./Starr's Mill) led the Bears with four and three goals, respectively, while Davis also added four draw controls and an assist. First year Haley McCue (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) also had a strong game with a pair of goals to go along with two ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover. Junior Leah Llewellyn (Port Deposit, Md./The Tome School) was active defensively with three cause turnover and two draw controls.
For the Lyons, first year Meryl Phair (Stockbridge, Mass./Monument Mountain Regional) led the scoring, finding the back of the net twice in the game. She also added four ground balls and was productive on the defensive end with two caused turnovers. Senior Kaitlin Braz (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) added a goals and contributed game-highs with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers. Senior Leila Kouakou (Leeds, Mass./Northampton) registered a goal, two draw controls, and a caused turnover, while sophomore Julianna Rankin (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) also had a goal as well as two draw controls.
Coast Guard opened up the game with a goal from sophomore Erin Mullen (Williamsburg, Va./Warhill) as Davis fed her in the front of the net four minutes into the game. Mount Holyoke answered less than a minute later as Rankin launched a shot from deep just past the reach of the CGA goalie to knot it up at 1-1. Coast Guard began to gain momentum three goals from three different players in a four-minute stretch to extend the lead to 4-1 with 20:48 to go in the half. MHC's Kouakou got on the board as she maneuvered her way from behind the net to slip the ball over the goalie for a score.
The Bears scored another three unanswered goals as Goins registered her second tally of the day as she went high to find the back of the net to go up, 7-2 with 12:44 to go. The Lyons made a push as Phair connected on two goals to cut the deficit to four heading into the break (8-4).
In the second half, Davis scored all of her four goals, including the final blow with 11 seconds to go to close out a 13-5 victory for Bears.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday as Mount Holyoke travels to Smith for a 6pm match, while Coast Guard welcomes MIT at 4pm.
