SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Six different players scored to lead Springfield College to a 16-5 victory over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Pride improve to 7-4 and remain perfect in conference play at 4-0. The Lyons are now 2-9 and 0-4 in NEWMAC action.
Junior attack Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass./Bourne) poured in a game-best five goals on six shots, adding three draw controls, while classmate and midfielder Kristen Steidler (Somers, Conn./Somers) had three goals, a game-best five assists, three ground balls and a draw control. Junior middie Kayla Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y./Mercy) posted four goals and a helper, while graduate student Bianca Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) chipped in with three assists.
For the Lyons, senior captain and attack Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa./Westtown School) and junior midfielder Kaitlin Braz (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) each notched two goals. Wagner also added an assist and two draw controls, while Braz posted a game-best five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior captain and defender Taylor Hough (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) addded two ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover.
Springfield jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Schroeher scored on a free position just over 30 seconds into the frame, followed by a Steidler pass for a Corsano goal at 17:56. Junior midfielder Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) then connected from Raniolo, followed by the second pass of the afternoon from Steidler to Schroeher for her second tally of the day with 12:28 to play.
Wagner broke up the run for the Pride, putting MHC on the board at 12:17 after collecting a pass off the draw and firing it in one-on-one. Despite the momentum, Springfield went on a 5-1 run, including three more goals from Corsano, to give the visitors a 9-2 lead at the half.
In the second stanza, the Pride continued to gain as Mahoney connected from Raniolo once more for the 10-2 lead. Braz grabbed her second tally of the contest at 28:49 to pull the Lyons within seven (10-3), but back-to-back free position goals from Steidler and sophomore midfielder Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H./Kennett) put the Pride back in control with 27:05 remaining.
The Lyons countered near the midway point as Wagner notched her second of the contest at 20:36 and then assisted less than 20 seconds later as sophomore attack Mazzie Meotti (South Glastonbury, Conn./Watkinson School) posted her first score of the contest.
Springfield once again kicked-up its offensive effort over the final 17:53 as Steidler, Schroeher and Corsano tacked on the final four goals of the game.
In goal, senior Gabby Anderson (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) earned the win for the Pride, stopping four shots over 46:53 minutes of action. First year Brenna Keefe (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) played the final 13:07 of relief and was not forced to make a save. For the Lyons, senior Isa Rodriguez (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville School) shouldered the loss, stopping two shots in the first half. Rookie Mia Wysocki (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) played the second half, making six saves.
Springfield held a 28-12 advantage in shots for the game, while also owning a 25-19 edge in ground balls and a 13-9 margin in draw controls. The Pride were 13-15 on the clear, while MHC was 11-21.
Both teams are back in action on Wednesday as Mount Holyoke travels to Coast Guard for a 7pm NEWMAC tilt, while Springfield hosts Westfield State in non-conference action at 6pm.
