Lacrosse Shoulders Loss to #14 Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior midfielder and captain Kirsten Kilburn recorded a game-best four goals, but it wasn't enough as the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team fell to #14 Amherst College by a 15-5 margin in non-conference action on Wednesday. With the victory, the Jeffs move to 9-4, while the Lyons slip to 5-8 on the season.

MHC opened the game's scoring at the 24:08 mark as junior captain and attacker Catherine Ryan scored unassisted. Amherst rebounded quickly as Mia Haughton and Claire Cagnassola each netted a pair of tallies as the Jeffs went on a 5-0 run for the 5-1 margin with 10:13 to play.

Kilburn pulled the Lyons to within three (5-2) at the 8:56 mark, but Priscilla Tyler notched back-to-back goals and Rachel Passarelli had a goal with two assits during a five-goal span for the home team. Kilburn was able to cut the margin to 10-3 with 30 seconds to go in the opening half, scoring on the free position.

In the second half, the Jeffs continued to press as Haughton, Tyler and Cagnassola each scored for a 13-3 advantage. Kilburn had an excellent unassisted effort with 11:00 on the clock and netted another free position and her fourth of the game at 7:17.

The goal would be the last for the Lyons as Amherst used strong defense over the final seven minutes for the victory.

In the battle of goaltenders, Amherst's Christy Forrest earned the victory, making three stops over the first half of action. Kyra Gardner came on in relief and did not record a save. For Mount Holyoke, sophomore Isa Rodriguez had nine stops.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they host Wellesley at 12pm on the Turf Field.
