SPRINGFIELD, Mass.— Despite a four-goal effort from both Julia Bell and Leila Kouakou, the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team shouldered a 15-14 loss to Western New England University in non-conference action on Tuesday. With the win – the 12th consecutive regular-season home win for the Golden Bears – WNE improves to 2-1 on the year. The Lyons saw their two-game win streak snapped and are now 2-2.

Facing a 13-12 deficit near the end of regulation, senior midfielder Kirsten Kilburn was awarded a free position shot. With 23 seconds remaining, Kilburn fired it in to tie the contest at 13-all and sophomore keeper Isa Rodriguez made a save on a shot by senior captain Jessica Scannapieco with two seconds to send the contest into overtime.

In the first overtime frame, MHC's Kouakou put the Lyons up by a 14-13 margin at 4:48, but Scannapieco answered at the 4:25 mark to knot it once more at 14-all. The Lyons won the ensuing draw control, but the Golden Bears gained possession and continued to hold. Scannapieco played the hero once again with 2:40 remaining, firing the eventual game-winner past Rodriguez for the 15-14 margin.

Mount Holyoke looked to find momentum late in the extra session, but an untimely turnover gave Western New England the ball at the 38 second mark and the home team held for the decision.

Scannapieco led all scorers with a game-best five goals, while senior Kaitlynn Stevens recorded a pair of goals with five assists. Junior Taylor Scialdone, senior captain Sarah Stevens and junior Tori Cirocco all had two goals apiece, while junior Brooke Kumnick added a goal and two helpers.

In addition to Bell and Kouakou's four goals, the Lyons saw junior captain Catherine Ryan post a game-high six assists, while sophomore Katherine Guinee had two goals. Kilburn finished with a hat-trick, including the game-tying goal, and two assists.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Monday when it squares-off against Bowdoin College at 12:30pm in Bradenton, Fla. Western New England is back on the field on Thursday when it hosts Castleton State College at 4pm.
